When Bbsr was created as a planned city, the central part was divided into 9 Units & various Nagars/Vihars. Bhubaneswar is the anglicisation of the native name “Bhubaneswara”(ଭୁବନେଶ୍ୱର), derived from the word Tribhubaneswara (ତ୍ରିଭୁବନେଶ୍ୱର), which literally means the Lord (Eeswara) of the Three Worlds (Tribhubana), which refers to Shiva.
IRC Village:
IRC Village named after Indian Road Congress (IRC) which was held in early 1980s at a barren land later came to be known as IRC Village which is not a village, rather a posh locality.
Chandaka:
Chandaka is said to be derived from Lord Buddha’s divine charioteer Chhandaka. And those who are thinking of Chandaka-Dampara sanctuary, Dompada is actually a princely state near Banki, of Raj-Nilagiri royals
Jagamara : Jagamara has been probably derived from the term Jagyanmara (yagna becomes impure).Sadhus visiting Khandagiri caves for meditation were disturbed by non-followers at Jagamara village (under Bechhapuri mouza)while performing jagyan.
Kalpana: Kalpana Chowk was named after the Kalpana Theatre which was the 1st cinema hall post independence in Bbsr. Kalpana (dream) was infact the dream biz of Padmanabha Nanda, who started the theatre biz with that name (which is no more now).
Master Canteen: Initially there was a snacks counter run by a teacher (fondly called Master), thus Master Canteen. Later on, it became Master General Store. Now there’s a fast food counter by the name Master Canteen operating near LCJ.
Satya Nagar : Satya Nagar is said to be named after one of the earliest residents of the area, named Satya’s family. The goddess at the famous Kali Temple in the area is called Maa Satya Kali.
Khandagiri – The local sadhu at the Khandagiri & Udayagiri hill says that the earlier name of twin hills were Kumaragiri & Skandagiri. Probably the term Skanda, got evolved as Khanda.
Raj Mahal Square was named after Hotel Raj Mahal (running) nearby opened around 65 years before by Raju Sahoo (Rajkishore Sahoo), who started biz from selling bara on thela to establishing 1st hotel-cum-restaurant in city.
Damana Square – the name is derived from the local deity, Maa Damanei.
Patia stands for Patiagarh, the ex-princely state which comprised of 20 villages around incl Kala Rahanga. Last time it was ceded to Kanika Raja in 1931. It’s famous for its Jagannath Temple, built in 1265 by King Ramachandradeba.
Master Canteen has more than 1 theory. Named after one of the business family members of Hans who was a Tailor Master (expert). He was commended by Biju Babu when he stiched a Band-Gala Coat overnight for him.
Rupali Square at Saheed Nagar junction was named after the small restaurant named Rupali started by a Balasore family of three at the place where Pathik Hotel stands. During early period, it was the only foodies joint for the SN ppl
